It is July. Most charter yachts are booked. But not all of them. Here is what is still available and how to move fast.
It is July. The Mediterranean charter season is in full swing. Most premium yachts were booked months ago. But not all of them. Every year, a percentage of bookings fall through, owners release previously held dates, and new yachts enter the market at short notice. The result is genuine last-minute availability on vessels that would normally be impossible to book at this stage of the season.
MY OCEAN currently has 8 superyachts with open weeks in July and August 2026. These range from 44 metres to 54 metres, accommodate 10 to 12 guests, and are available in the Western Mediterranean: French Riviera, Italy, Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balearics. Several are offering potential discounts for confirmed bookings placed now.
The fleet includes MARAYA (54.2m CRN, 12 guests, 15 crew), AWANDRA (52m Baglietto 2025, the newest yacht in the collection), GHOST III (49.2m Acico with 8,600nm range for long-distance cruising), and FAST and FURIOUS (44.6m AB Yachts with a 42-knot top speed for clients who want to cover distance between anchorages quickly). There are four common reasons a premium yacht becomes available at short notice. First, a confirmed booking cancels due to schedule changes, illness, or travel disruption. The owner is left with an empty week that was previously committed. Second, an owner who was planning to use the yacht privately decides to make it available for charter instead. Third, a yacht completes a refit or survey and enters the charter market mid-season with fresh availability. Fourth, an owner who was holding dates for a specific event (Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival) releases them when the event booking does not materialise.
In all four cases, the owner faces the same calculation: accept a charter at a competitive rate, or leave the yacht empty and absorb the running costs of 40,000 to 60,000 euros per week. Most choose to charter.
When a premium yacht becomes available last-minute, it typically books within 48 to 72 hours. Speed is the single most important factor. The process needs to be efficient and decisive:
Step one: Contact your broker with your dates, guest count, and any specific requirements (destination preference, budget range, must-have amenities). The more specific you are, the faster the broker can match you to available yachts.
Step two: Your broker confirms availability and provides the charter rate, APA estimate, and any discount being offered. This typically happens within 24 hours of your initial enquiry.
Step three: If the yacht and rate work for you, the charter agreement is prepared and sent for electronic signature. This can happen the same day you confirm your interest.
Step four: The deposit (50 percent of charter fee) and APA (30 to 35 percent of charter fee) are paid by bank transfer. Some yachts accept cryptocurrency (Bitcoin and USDT). Read our APA guide for details on how the advance provisioning allowance works.
Step five: The preference sheet is completed. This covers dietary requirements, drink preferences, activity interests, and any special occasions during the trip. The crew uses this to prepare everything before you board.
The entire process from first contact to stepping on board can happen in under a week. MY OCEAN has arranged charters with as little as 48 hours notice for clients who are ready to move quickly.
Last-minute does not always mean cheaper. Some yachts hold their published rates regardless of timing, particularly the most in-demand vessels with strong reputations. But many owners are pragmatic: an empty week earns nothing, so they would rather offer a 10 to 20 percent discount than leave the yacht idle and absorb the operating costs.
The discount is never guaranteed. It depends on the specific yacht, the specific dates, and how many other enquiries the owner has received for that window. But it is always worth asking. The worst that can happen is the owner says no and you pay the published rate for a yacht you want.
If you book six months ahead, you can choose from hundreds of yachts across every size, style, and destination. Last-minute, you choose from what is available in that specific window. But what is available is often excellent. The yachts with open weeks at this stage are typically the larger, more expensive vessels in the 40 to 55 metre range. Smaller yachts (under 30 metres) book out completely by June. The premium end of the market is where last-minute availability concentrates.
The other trade-off is flexibility. You may need to adjust your preferred destination or dates by a few days to match what is open. A client who says "I want the French Riviera, any week in July, for 10 guests" will find options. A client who says "I want Portofino, July 15 to 22 only, on a 50-metre sailing yacht" will likely find nothing at this stage.
Not all Mediterranean destinations are equally suited to last-minute charter planning. Some require advance reservations at restaurants, marinas, and beach clubs that are difficult to secure at short notice. Others are more relaxed and accommodate spontaneous arrivals without issue.
The French Riviera is the most challenging for last-minute planning. Popular restaurants in Saint-Tropez and Cap Ferrat book weeks in advance during July and August. Marina berths in Monaco, Antibes, and Cannes are allocated months ahead. However, the anchorages along the Riviera are free and plentiful, and the chef eliminates the need for restaurant reservations entirely. A skilled captain will know which bays offer the best shelter, the clearest water, and the most scenic settings.
Sardinia and Corsica are excellent for last-minute charters. The coastline is long, the anchorages are numerous, and the pace is more relaxed than the Riviera. Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda have a social scene, but the majority of the island offers quiet coves, crystal-clear water, and a sense of genuine remoteness that is increasingly rare in the Mediterranean. The west coast of Corsica in particular remains relatively undiscovered by the charter fleet, offering dramatic granite cliffs, turquoise bays, and virtually no other yachts at anchor.
The Balearic Islands (Ibiza, Mallorca, Formentera, Menorca) work well for last-minute bookings because the islands are close together, the weather is reliable, and the infrastructure supports large yachts without advance planning. The anchorages around Formentera are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean, with white sand and Caribbean-blue water. Ibiza offers nightlife and energy for groups who want both relaxation and entertainment.
Croatia and the Amalfi Coast require slightly more advance planning for marina berths but are achievable at short notice if the captain is experienced in the area. The Amalfi Coast in particular has limited anchorage space and strong currents that require local knowledge. A yacht with a good captain who knows the area will find spots that are inaccessible to less experienced crews.
Booking a charter with 1 to 3 weeks notice requires some practical preparation that differs from a booking made months in advance. The key areas to address quickly are travel logistics, the preference sheet, and any special requirements.
Travel to the embarkation port is the first priority. Most summer charters in the Western Mediterranean embark from Nice, Antibes, Olbia (Sardinia), Palma de Mallorca, or Ibiza. All are served by international airports with frequent connections from London, Dubai, and major European cities. Private aviation can arrange transfers with 24 to 48 hours notice if commercial options are limited. Your broker can coordinate airport transfers and helicopter connections to the yacht if the embarkation port is not directly served by your flight.
The preference sheet is a detailed questionnaire covering dietary requirements, allergies, drink preferences, activity interests, cabin allocation, and any special occasions during the trip. Completing this promptly (within 24 to 48 hours of booking) gives the crew time to provision the yacht with your preferred food and drinks. The chef will typically call or email to discuss menu preferences directly, particularly for guests with dietary restrictions or specific culinary interests.
Special requirements such as diving equipment, specific water toys, floral arrangements, birthday decorations, or entertainment (DJs, musicians) can usually be arranged with 5 to 7 days notice in the Western Mediterranean. The management company has established supplier relationships in every major port and can source most requests at short notice. The only items that genuinely require advance planning are highly specific requests such as rare wines, custom cakes, or equipment that needs to be shipped from another country.
Clients booking at short notice often have specific concerns that do not apply to bookings made months ahead. Here are the most common questions and straightforward answers.
Will the yacht be in good condition? Yes. Charter yachts are maintained to survey standard regardless of booking timing. The crew prepares the yacht to the same level whether the booking was made six months ago or six days ago. If anything, a yacht that has been actively chartering all season is in peak operational condition because any issues have already been identified and resolved.
Can I get travel insurance at short notice? Yes. Most specialist travel insurance providers can issue policies within 24 hours. Charter-specific insurance (covering cancellation of the charter fee) is available from specialist marine insurers. Your broker can recommend providers who understand the yacht charter market and offer appropriate coverage.
What if I need to cancel after booking? The standard charter contract (MYBA terms) specifies cancellation terms. Typically, if you cancel more than 6 weeks before departure, you forfeit the deposit (50 percent). If you cancel within 6 weeks, you forfeit the full charter fee. Cancellation insurance is available and strongly recommended for last-minute bookings where schedule changes are more likely.
Is the crew prepared for my group? Professional charter crews are trained to prepare for new guests quickly. The preference sheet gives them everything they need. Most crews can turn around between charters in 24 to 48 hours, deep-cleaning the yacht, provisioning, and preparing for the next group. Your experience will not be diminished by the short booking window.
