What is normally included in the charter fee?

On many professionally crewed yacht charters, the base charter fee covers use of the yacht, its standard equipment, crew wages, crew provisions, vessel insurance and specified basic operating supplies. The exact inclusions are defined by the yacht's charter agreement.

Operating expenses for the charter party are usually separate. The published MYBA Charter Agreement lists fuel, food and beverages for guests, berthing, harbour charges, local taxes, communications, shore power and requested special equipment among the costs paid by the charterer.¹

That is why two yachts with similar base rates can produce different overall budgets. Route length, cruising speed, time in port, provisioning preferences, fuel use and additional equipment can all change the final expenditure.

What is APA?

APA means Advance Provisioning Allowance. It is an advance account used by the captain to pay the charterer's operating expenses during the trip.

The captain records expenditure and provides an account. If funds remain, the unused balance is returned. If actual costs are higher than the amount advanced, the charterer may be asked to add funds.¹

APA is not a fixed extra fee or an automatic amount spent in full. It is a practical way to fund variable costs. The likely expenditure should be discussed using the proposed itinerary and preferences, while recognising that weather, fuel use, berth availability and guest choices may change the final amount.

What should you expect from a crewed yacht?

A crewed charter includes a professional captain and crew, but the onboard experience differs from yacht to yacht. Crew size, cabin service, cuisine, water-toy support and guest interaction should be considered alongside the yacht's layout.

The captain has authority over navigation, safety, weather decisions, equipment use and the operation of the yacht. A proposed itinerary is therefore a plan, not a guarantee. Conditions, local restrictions and berth availability may require changes.

Before booking, compare practical details such as:
