Can You Charter a Yacht with Bitcoin? How Crypto Payments Work in Yachting

Crypto payments are now accepted by a growing number of yacht owners and charter companies. Here is how it works, what currencies are accepted, and what the process looks like from enquiry to boarding.

The short answer is yes. A growing number of yacht owners and charter management companies now accept cryptocurrency as payment for yacht charters. Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, and USDC are the most commonly accepted digital assets. The process is straightforward, the legal framework exists, and the transaction can be completed in hours rather than the days required for traditional international bank transfers.

MY OCEAN has facilitated multiple charter bookings paid in cryptocurrency. The demand is driven by clients who hold significant digital asset portfolios and prefer to pay directly from those holdings rather than converting to fiat currency first. For these clients, paying in crypto is not a novelty. It is simply the most efficient way to move large sums internationally without the friction of correspondent banking.

Which cryptocurrencies are accepted for yacht charters?

The most widely accepted cryptocurrencies for yacht charter payments are Bitcoin (BTC), Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC), and Ethereum (ETH). Stablecoins (USDT and USDC) are preferred by many owners because they eliminate the volatility risk that exists with Bitcoin and Ethereum. The charter rate is agreed in euros or dollars, and the stablecoin equivalent is transferred at the point of payment.

Bitcoin remains the most requested payment method among crypto-paying clients, despite its volatility. The solution is simple: the charter rate is fixed in fiat currency (typically euros for Mediterranean charters), and the Bitcoin equivalent is calculated at the moment of transfer. The owner or management company converts to fiat immediately upon receipt, eliminating exposure to price fluctuation. The entire conversion process takes minutes through specialist payment processors.

Ethereum is accepted by some owners but is less common than Bitcoin or stablecoins. Other altcoins are rarely accepted directly, though some payment processors can facilitate conversion from a wider range of digital assets into the accepted currencies.

How the payment process works

The charter booking process with crypto payment follows the same steps as a traditional booking, with one difference at the payment stage. Here is the typical sequence:

First, you enquire with your broker about yacht availability and agree on the charter terms, dates, and rate. This is identical to any charter booking. The charter agreement is prepared under standard MYBA terms (the industry-standard contract used globally for yacht charters).

Second, the charter agreement is signed. The contract specifies the charter fee in fiat currency (euros or dollars). A separate addendum or clause confirms that payment will be made in cryptocurrency and specifies the conversion mechanism.

Third, the deposit is paid. For a standard charter, this is 50 percent of the charter fee. The payment processor generates a wallet address and the exact amount of cryptocurrency required at the current exchange rate. You have a limited window (typically 15 to 30 minutes) to complete the transfer at that rate. If the window expires, a new rate is generated.

Fourth, the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance, typically 30 to 35 percent of the charter fee) is paid in the same manner, usually 4 to 6 weeks before the charter start date.

Fifth, the balance (remaining 50 percent of the charter fee) is paid 4 to 6 weeks before departure, again via crypto transfer at the prevailing rate.

The entire payment process is handled through regulated payment processors that specialise in high-value cryptocurrency transactions. These processors handle KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance, anti-money laundering checks, and the instant conversion to fiat for the receiving party.

KYC and compliance requirements

Cryptocurrency payments for yacht charters are subject to the same compliance requirements as any high-value transaction in the luxury sector. This means KYC verification is mandatory. You will need to provide proof of identity, proof of address, and in most cases, proof of the source of funds (demonstrating that the cryptocurrency was acquired legitimately).

The compliance process is handled by the payment processor rather than the yacht owner or broker. It typically takes 24 to 48 hours for first-time clients. Once verified, subsequent transactions are faster because your profile is already on file.

This is not optional. Any yacht owner or broker who offers to accept crypto without KYC is operating outside the law and exposing both parties to significant legal risk. Legitimate crypto charter payments always involve full compliance checks.

Advantages of paying for a yacht charter with crypto

Speed is the primary advantage. An international bank transfer for a six-figure sum can take 3 to 5 business days to clear, sometimes longer if correspondent banks are involved or if the transfer crosses multiple jurisdictions. A cryptocurrency transfer settles in minutes (for stablecoins and Ethereum) or within an hour (for Bitcoin). For last-minute charter bookings where speed matters, this is a genuine operational advantage.

Reduced banking friction is the second benefit. Clients based in jurisdictions with restrictive banking systems, or those who hold the majority of their liquid wealth in digital assets, often find it simpler to pay directly in crypto rather than converting to fiat first and then initiating a bank transfer. The conversion step is eliminated.

Privacy (within legal limits) is a consideration for some clients. While KYC is mandatory, the transaction itself does not pass through multiple banking intermediaries who each have visibility of the payment details. The transfer goes directly from your wallet to the payment processor.

Tax efficiency may apply depending on your jurisdiction. In some countries, paying for services directly in cryptocurrency avoids a taxable disposal event that would occur if you first sold the crypto for fiat. This is jurisdiction-specific and you should consult your tax advisor.

Limitations and considerations

Not all yacht owners accept cryptocurrency. The acceptance rate is growing but it is not universal. Approximately 30 to 40 percent of charter yachts in the 40-metre-plus range now have owners or management companies willing to accept crypto payments. For smaller yachts (under 30 metres), the acceptance rate is lower. Your broker will confirm which yachts on your shortlist can accommodate crypto payment.

Volatility risk exists for Bitcoin and Ethereum payments. If the market moves significantly between the time you agree the rate and the time you execute the transfer, the amount of crypto required will change. Stablecoins eliminate this issue entirely, which is why many clients prefer to pay in USDT or USDC.

The APA (running expenses during the charter) is typically managed in fiat currency regardless of how the charter fee was paid. The captain uses a cash float or card for fuel, provisions, and port fees during the trip. At the end of the charter, the APA accounting is settled in fiat.

Crew gratuity is always paid in cash (euros in the Mediterranean, dollars in the Caribbean) directly to the captain at the end of the charter. This cannot be paid in cryptocurrency.

Can you buy a yacht with Bitcoin?

Yes. The same payment infrastructure that facilitates charter payments also handles yacht purchase transactions. Several high-profile yacht sales have been completed in Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2025 and 2026, including vessels valued at over 10 million euros. The process is similar: the sale price is agreed in fiat, the crypto equivalent is calculated at the point of transfer, and the funds are converted immediately upon receipt by the seller.

For yacht purchases, the compliance requirements are more extensive due to the higher transaction values. Source of funds documentation is more detailed, and the payment processor may require additional verification steps. The timeline for completion is typically 5 to 10 business days including compliance, compared to 2 to 4 weeks for a traditional bank-financed purchase.

Which yachts accept crypto payments?

The acceptance of cryptocurrency varies by yacht owner and management company. In the 40-metre-plus charter market, approximately 30 to 40 percent of yachts now have owners willing to accept crypto. The percentage is higher among newer yachts (built after 2020) whose owners tend to be younger and more comfortable with digital assets. It is lower among traditional family-owned yachts where the owner or trust structure prefers conventional banking.

MY OCEAN maintains a current list of crypto-accepting yachts across all size categories. When you enquire, specify that you intend to pay in cryptocurrency and Emily will filter your shortlist to include only yachts where crypto payment is confirmed. This saves time and avoids the situation where you select a yacht only to discover the owner does not accept digital assets.

How to book a crypto-paid charter with MY OCEAN

The process starts the same way as any charter enquiry. Contact Emily Cossey at MY OCEAN with your preferred dates, destination, guest count, and budget. Mention that you intend to pay in cryptocurrency so she can confirm which yachts on your shortlist accept crypto payments.

Once you select a yacht and agree terms, the charter agreement is prepared with a crypto payment clause. The payment processor handles the rest: KYC verification, wallet address generation, rate locking, and instant conversion. You receive confirmation of each payment within minutes of the transfer completing.

The entire experience onboard is identical regardless of payment method. The crew does not know or care how you paid. The yacht, the service, the itinerary, and the experience are exactly the same.
