The categories that matter for charter are: small yachts (15 to 24 metres), mid-size yachts (25 to 39 metres), large yachts (40 to 55 metres), and superyachts (56 metres and above). Each category has different cabin configurations, crew sizes, deck layouts, and charter rates. The jump between categories is not linear. A 40-metre yacht is not simply a bigger version of a 25-metre yacht. It is a fundamentally different experience in terms of space, service, and capability.

Beam (width) matters as much as length. A wide-beam 30-metre yacht can feel more spacious than a narrow 35-metre yacht. 8 to 10 guests: 25 to 39 metres

For groups of 8 to 10 guests, the 25 to 39 metre range provides the right balance of cabin count, deck space, and crew service. These yachts typically offer 4 to 5 cabins, a crew of 5 to 8, and multiple outdoor areas including a flybridge, aft deck, and foredeck.

This is the most popular size range for family holidays and friend groups. Four cabins accommodate 8 guests comfortably with each couple or pair having their own ensuite bathroom. Five cabins allow 10 guests with the same level of privacy. The master cabin on yachts in this range is typically a full-beam suite on the main deck with panoramic windows.

Deck space becomes noticeably more generous at 30 metres and above. You get a proper dining table for 10 on the aft deck, sun loungers on the flybridge, and often a jacuzzi. The swim platform at the stern is large enough to launch water toys comfortably and serves as the primary access point to the sea.

10 to 12 guests: 40 to 55 metres

For groups of 10 to 12 guests, you need a yacht in the 40 to 55 metre range. This is where the experience shifts from a boat holiday to a floating hotel. Five to six cabins, a crew of 9 to 15, multiple deck levels, a beach club, and a full suite of water toys are standard at this size.

The key advantage of 40-plus metre yachts is separation. Guests can spread across three or four deck levels without being on top of each other. 14 to 20 guests: 55 to 80 metres

Groups larger than 12 guests require yachts above 55 metres. At this size, you are in true superyacht territory. Seven to ten cabins, crews of 15 to 30, and facilities that rival boutique hotels: cinema rooms, spas, gyms, multiple jacuzzis, helipads, and garages housing tenders, jet skis, and submarines.

The charter market for yachts above 55 metres is smaller and more exclusive. Fewer than 200 yachts in this size range are available for charter globally. Rates start at EUR 400,000 per week and can exceed EUR 2,000,000 per week for the largest and most prestigious vessels. Booking typically requires 6 to 12 months advance notice for peak season dates.

For groups of 14 to 20 guests, the alternative to one very large yacht is two smaller yachts sailing together. This is increasingly popular for corporate retreats, milestone birthdays, and wedding groups. Two 40-metre yachts anchored side by side provide more total cabin space than one 60-metre yacht, often at a lower combined rate, with the added flexibility of splitting the group for different activities during the day.

20 to 30 guests: multiple yachts or event charters

For groups exceeding 20 guests, a single yacht is rarely practical. Maritime safety regulations limit overnight guest capacity based on vessel classification. Most charter yachts are classified for a maximum of 12 overnight guests regardless of their physical size. Day guests (additional people who join for daytime activities but do not sleep onboard) can increase the number to 20 or more on larger yachts, but overnight capacity remains fixed.

The solution for large groups is a flotilla charter: two or three yachts sailing the same itinerary, anchoring together, and sharing social time during the day while sleeping on separate vessels at night. This works exceptionally well for milestone celebrations, corporate events, and extended family reunions where the group wants to be together but also values having their own space.

Guest count determines the minimum size, but other factors influence whether you should go larger. If your group includes children, additional deck space and a larger tender become important. Children need room to play, and a bigger tender means easier shore transfers with car seats and beach equipment.

If water sports are a priority, look for yachts with a dedicated garage or large swim platform. A 45-metre yacht with a proper garage can carry jet skis, SeaBobs, paddleboards, a wakeboard, diving equipment, and an inflatable slide simultaneously. A 30-metre yacht may only have space for a jet ski and paddleboards.

If you plan to spend significant time at anchor rather than in port, deck space and stabilisation become more important than cabin size. You will be living outdoors for most of the day, and a yacht with generous flybridge, foredeck, and beach club areas will feel dramatically more spacious than one with the same cabin count but less outdoor living space.

Speed matters if your itinerary covers long distances. A displacement yacht (12 to 14 knots) is comfortable and fuel-efficient but covers less ground per day than a semi-displacement yacht (18 to 22 knots) or a planing yacht (30 to 42 knots). If you want to visit multiple islands or coastlines in a single week, a faster yacht allows more flexibility without sacrificing time at anchor.

How to choose the right yacht for your group

Start with your guest count and work outward.
