What Happens If the Weather Is Bad During Your Charter?

Rain, wind, and rough seas: what actually happens during a yacht charter when the weather turns. Captain authority, MYBA cancellation rules, and how to choose the calmest destinations.

Weather and Yacht Charter: What Actually Happens

One of the most common concerns we hear from first-time charter clients is about weather. What happens if it rains? What if the sea is rough? Can you cancel? Do you get a refund? Having arranged over 2,000 charters at MY OCEAN, we can tell you exactly how weather affects a charter and what your options are.

The Captain Makes the Call

Your captain is responsible for the safety of everyone on board. If conditions are unsafe for sailing, the captain will adjust the itinerary. This might mean staying in a sheltered bay instead of crossing open water, remaining in port for a few hours until a squall passes, or taking an alternative route that avoids rough seas. The captain monitors weather forecasts continuously and plans 24 to 48 hours ahead.

Rain Does Not Mean a Ruined Charter

Mediterranean rain in summer is typically short-lived. A 30-minute shower followed by sunshine is far more common than all-day rain. Most superyachts have extensive indoor spaces: salons, dining areas, cinemas, gyms, and spa facilities. A rainy morning often becomes the perfect excuse to enjoy a long breakfast, watch a film in the cinema room, or book a massage with the on-board therapist.

Wind: The Real Factor

Wind matters more than rain for charter comfort. The Meltemi in Greece can blow strongly in July and August, particularly around the Cyclades. The Mistral affects the French Riviera and Corsica. Your captain knows these patterns intimately and will route around them. In Croatia, the Bora wind is predictable and your captain will shelter in the many protected bays along the Dalmatian coast.

Can You Cancel Due to Weather?

Standard MYBA charter agreements do not allow cancellation due to weather unless conditions make it physically impossible to board the yacht. Rain, moderate wind, or overcast skies are not grounds for cancellation or refund. However, if a genuine storm or hurricane makes the charter area unsafe, the charter may be postponed or relocated by mutual agreement. This is extremely rare in the Mediterranean during summer season.

Charter Insurance: What It Covers

We recommend all clients take out charter cancellation insurance. This typically covers: illness or injury preventing travel, bereavement, jury service, and in some policies, severe weather events. Standard travel insurance does not usually cover charter cancellation, so a specialist policy is important. MY OCEAN can recommend providers who understand yacht charter specifically.

How to Minimise Weather Risk

Choose your destination wisely. Croatia has the most sheltered coastline in the Mediterranean with over 1,000 islands providing protection. The French Riviera is generally calm from June to September. Greece is best in June or September when the Meltemi is less intense. Turkey offers consistently calm conditions along the Lycian coast. If weather certainty is your priority, tell Emily and she will recommend the most reliable destination for your dates.

What Experienced Charter Guests Know

Repeat charter clients understand that weather is part of the adventure. A misty morning in Montenegro reveals the coastline differently. A breezy afternoon in Sardinia means perfect sailing conditions. The crew adapts the programme to the conditions, and often the unplanned moments become the highlights. Trust your captain, enjoy the yacht's indoor facilities when needed, and remember that the Mediterranean delivers sunshine on the vast majority of charter days.
