The Bahamas is the most extraordinary sailing ground in the western hemisphere. 700 islands spread across 250,000 square kilometres of ocean, with water that moves from turquoise to deep blue in the space of a few metres. The Exumas — a chain of 365 islands and cays — are the centrepiece of any Bahamas charter: shallow banks, swimming pigs, nurse sharks, and beaches that look like they belong in a different world.
The Exumas are the most popular charter destination in the Bahamas. The chain runs 150 kilometres from Nassau south to Great Exuma. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park — a protected area in the northern Exumas — has some of the clearest water in the world and is accessible only by boat. The swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, the nurse sharks at Compass Cay, and the iguanas at Allen's Cay are all accessible only by sea.
Nassau is the main provisioning base for Bahamas charters. The Nassau Harbour Club and the Albany marina are the two main marinas. Albany, in the southwest of New Providence, is the most prestigious marina in the Bahamas — a private resort with a golf course, restaurants, and a superyacht marina.
The Abacos, in the northern Bahamas, are the best sailing ground in the archipelago. The Sea of Abaco — a protected body of water between the main island and the outer cays — is perfect for sailing: consistent trade winds, calm water, and a chain of small settlements with good anchorages.
