The three most popular East Med charter destinations compared honestly. Greece for islands and clarity, Croatia for shelter and cuisine, Turkey for value and history.
Greece, Croatia, and Turkey are the three most requested East Mediterranean charter destinations at MY OCEAN. Each offers something distinct: Greece has the islands and the light, Croatia has the coastline and the cuisine, Turkey has the history and the value. This guide compares them honestly across the factors that matter most to charter clients.
Greece offers over 6,000 islands and the clearest water in the Mediterranean. The Cyclades (Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos) deliver the iconic white-and-blue aesthetic with world-class restaurants and nightlife. The Ionian islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos) are greener, calmer, and better for families. The Saronic Gulf near Athens is ideal for shorter charters with easy access from the airport.
Best for: Island-hopping variety, nightlife (Mykonos), romantic settings (Santorini), crystal-clear swimming, authentic taverna culture.
Season: May to October. Peak is July and August. Best value in June and September when the Meltemi wind is calmer.
Charter rates: From 20,000 euros per week for a 25-metre motor yacht to 300,000+ euros for a 50-metre superyacht in the Cyclades during peak season.
Watch out for: The Meltemi wind in July and August can make the Cyclades uncomfortable for those prone to seasickness. The Ionian is calmer.
Croatia has over 1,200 islands along the Dalmatian coast, creating the most sheltered cruising ground in the Mediterranean. Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar, and Korcula offer a mix of medieval architecture, excellent restaurants, and pristine anchorages. The Kornati archipelago is a national park with uninhabited islands and turquoise bays.
Best for: Calm seas (sheltered by islands), food and wine, medieval towns, families with children, Game of Thrones fans (Dubrovnik).
Season: May to October. Peak is July and August. September is excellent with warm water and fewer crowds.
Charter rates: From 18,000 euros per week for a 25-metre motor yacht to 250,000+ euros for a 50-metre superyacht. Generally 10 to 15 percent less expensive than Greece for equivalent yachts.
Watch out for: Marinas can be crowded in August, particularly Hvar and Dubrovnik. Book berths in advance or anchor out.
The Turkish Riviera (Lycian coast) from Bodrum to Antalya offers ancient ruins, empty bays, and charter rates 20 to 30 percent lower than Greece or Croatia. Bodrum has a vibrant marina scene. Gocek is the gateway to the Twelve Islands. Kas and Kalkan offer dramatic cliff-backed anchorages. The water temperature is consistently warm from June to October.
Best for: Value for money, ancient history (Ephesus, Lycian tombs), empty anchorages, warm water, gulet charters (traditional wooden sailing yachts).
Season: May to November (longer than Greece or Croatia). Peak is July and August but September and October are excellent.
Charter rates: From 12,000 euros per week for a traditional gulet to 200,000+ euros for a modern superyacht. Consistently the best value in the East Med.
Watch out for: Fewer high-end restaurants ashore compared to Greece or Croatia. The yacht's chef becomes more important here.
Water clarity: Greece (exceptional) > Turkey (very good) > Croatia (good). Shelter from wind: Croatia (excellent) > Turkey (good) > Greece (variable). Nightlife: Greece (Mykonos) > Croatia (Hvar) > Turkey (Bodrum). Value: Turkey (best) > Croatia (good) > Greece (premium). Food ashore: Croatia (excellent) > Greece (very good) > Turkey (good in towns). History: Turkey (ancient ruins) > Greece (classical) > Croatia (medieval).
